Doo-Wop!

A promotional poster for doo-wop, an incredibly vibrant R&B genre from the 40s-60s that sprung up from Black American youth. The style showcases seamless group harmonies that leave little to no room for instrumentation. The warmth that these songs emit is one-of-a-kind and it is reflected in the vintage elements and colour palette.

Rough Sketches
All 5 of these sketches are testing different ways of evoking the energy of doo-wop; playing with the arrangement of singers, the 50s aesthetic with LP records, the iconic Apollo Theatre itself, and the chosen sketch of a group performing on stage. The 6th drawing is a revised version of the initial 5th sketch.
Linear Rough
The main elements are created in Illustrator, with the shape tool and pen tool. Text is hand-drawn for now, so final placement and font can later be decided. Working with gray tones, the colours will be added for the final poster.
Revised Linear
Preliminary colours are applied, details added to the singers and the marquee sign, fonts are chosen. Shadows behind the singers are added to give depth to the piece and clarify the oval shape as a spotlight. For the final piece, 3D shapes are applied to the microphone.
